save money with student discounts

As a student, you are more than likely living on a tight budget. Thankfully, many student discounts are available to help you save money. You can use your student ID card to save money on:

Food

Many restaurants give discounts or special promotions to students with valid student ID cards. Check with local restaurants around your campus to see if any discounts are offered. With fast food chains, individual franchise owners decide whether or not to provide student discounts, so offers may vary among locations. Some of the restaurant franchises that participate in student discount programs include: Chick-fil-A, Subway, McDonald’s, Burger King, Dairy Queen, and Chipotle.

Entertainment

Having fun doesn't have to be expensive. Many entertainment venues extend discount offers to students. The next time you purchase tickets for a movie, sporting event, concert, museum, theme park, fair, etc., ask if they offer discounts or special promotions to students.

Insurance

Most insurance companies, such as Allstate, State Farm, and Geico, provide a car insurance discount to students who make good grades. Contact your local insurance agent for more details.

Computers

Nowadays, it's almost impossible to complete schoolwork without a personal computer. If you are looking for a good deal on a computer, be sure to utilize your student ID. Computer companies, such as Apple, Dell, and HP, offer a variety of promotions, ranging from special student pricing to promotional gift cards.

Cell phone bills

Several of the top-rated cell phone providers offer student discounts.  Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T give discounts to students who attend participating schools. Call your cell phone provider to ask if you qualify for any student discounts and to see how much you could save on your monthly bill.

Clothing

To build a stylish wardrobe for cheap, shop at apparel retailers that extend student discounts. J. Crew offer a 15% discount off full-priced purchases with valid student ID. When shopping at local retailers, be sure to ask if they offer any discounts or promotions for students.

Travel

If you are a college student, your transportation costs may be expensive if you travel back home a lot to visit family or decide to study abroad. When booking travel reservations, be sure to utilize sites that offer student deals, such as StudentUniverse.com.

Subscriptions and memberships

Several subscriptions and memberships exist specifically for student deals. You may have to pay certain fees to become members, but the extra benefits and money saved down the road may be worth the upfront expenses. These student deal subscriptions and memberships include:

  • Amazon Student – As an Amazon Student member, you can receive (at no charge) six months of free two-day shipping with Amazon Prime (on eligible purchases) as well as deals and promotions exclusively for students. You would have unlimited instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV episodes and be able to borrow free Kindle books. Once the free six month membership is over, your account would automatically renew to receive Amazon Prime for up to four years at a charge of $59 (a 50% discount). Note: You can set your account to not automatically upgrade to a paid subscription at any time during the free period.
  • UNiDAYS - With a free UNiDAYS account, you will have access to student discounts online and in stores with leading brands and merchants, such as Aerie, American Eagle, Forever 21, Bed Bath & Beyond, GoPro, Hello Fresh, Lyft, Uber, and much more!
  • Sam's Club Collegiate Membership – From electronics to dorm room necessities to food and cleaning supplies, Sam's Club offers a one-stop shop for college students. After registering with UNiDAYS, you can purchase a Sam’s Club Collegiate membership for $45 and receive a $15 gift card to help offset the cost of your first purchase. Each membership comes with a complimentary add-on card, so your roommate can help with shopping duties and benefit from the savings.
  • Student Advantage Discount Card – With the Student Advantage card, you can save money on purchases that you may not be able to by just using your student ID card. If you are over the age of 16, you are eligible to purchase a card. Use this card to receive various student discounts at numerous local and national businesses, such as Target.com, Greyhound, and Foot Locker.

Check with your school to see if they have a list of places that offer discounts to students. Your school may have negotiated student deals with local businesses in your community. If you live in an area where businesses do not offer a lot of student discounts, you may be able to save money using Groupon or LivingSocial.
